Your weekend escape itinerary is sure to have featured the beaches of Alibaug at some point. However, have you ventured to Korlai, just 19km to its south? If not, here's your chance. This Sunday, sign up for a day-long trip to the lesser-known Portuguese enclave, just three hours away from Mumbai, where you get to trek the ruins of the fort, walk through a quaint village, enjoy local cuisine and explore a lighthouse too.

Also known as Castle Curlew or El Moro, the fort is located southwest of Revdanda, and roughly two kilometres far from the base village, Korlai. It was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century as a way to defend their province that stretched from Korlai to Bassein (Vasai). Later, the Marathas captured it.

Soak in a panoramic view of the Arabian sea from the top. Also, visit the lighthouse, located 150ft above sea level on the western slopes of Korlai hill, which was built in 1955. It's fully automated, with the light flashing every three seconds. Ashok Gangurde, an expert at the lighthouse, will guide you on the tour, where you will also get to spot a few cannons and cabins near its gate. The area houses a beach featuring both, black and white sand. "You can interact with the villagers, who speak a local dialect called Kristi that is influenced by Portuguese and Creole languages," says Shankar Aiyar, founder of Privilege Hospitality, organisers of the trip.
