Designer labels are highly valued in pre-loved shopping

Shopping, as it should be, is fun. But it should also be done in an economic and environmentally responsible way. If you are conscious of your shopping habits and prefer to thrift or swap clothes, extend this lifestyle to the festivities, too. Along with occasional thrift pop-ups and online platforms for vintage finds and everyday wear, there’s also a space for pre-owned luxury items and high-end fashion wear; look at the Kardashian Kloset where the famous family sells their pre-worn outfits. Mumbai-based The Luxury One (TLO), which launched this May, buys and sells pre-loved luxury designer items to advocate a sustainable lifestyle, and also bridge the gap between luxury and affordability. Prada, here we come.

The platform sells bags, wallets, belts, shoes, sunglasses and other items and houses only international brands. The process for sellers and buyers is simple. People looking to sell their luxury items can send in the item’s details and photographs. After the cost is evaluated, the said item goes through quality checks and authentication. For buyers, it’s like shopping at your favourite luxury store at competitive prices that are 40 to 50 per cent lower than market price. Founder Divya Lalwani shares that October is a great time to de-clutter your closet since it’s the start of the festival season with Diwali, Christmas and New Year lined up, and people are looking for new clothes. Lalwani, whose love for fashion led her to launch TLO, suggests dressing up an outfit with accessories. She notes, “People won’t do Diwali lunches with heavy outfits. This is where accessories will help you assemble a look. For dinners, when your clothes are eye-catching and festively loud, let your accessories complement them.” You can add a tote or sling bag with sunglasses for the day, and a clutch or belt to traditional Indian wear for an Indo-Western look.

The Indian market is still warming up to the idea of pre-loved shopping. Many who purchase designer labels know that it is not only a luxury spend, but also an investment. After six to seven months, one can re-sell the item even if it was pre-owned. But Lalwani also suggests not hoarding luxury items in order to retain their value, and parting with them sooner will ensure that they sell at a good price.
