A workshop conducted by SKRAP in pre-pandemic times

India is one of the world’s largest producers of waste. The substantial use of plastic and non-biodegradable products has wreaked havoc on the environment, and the usage has not seen any notable reduction. SKRAP, a Mumbai-based sustainability firm offering sustainable and zero waste solutions to business and brands, will be organising a workshop tomorrow to help consumers combat wastefulness this festive season.


This workshop hopes to guide its attendees about the importance of sustainable and responsible consumption and also share quick and easy tips to adopt environmentally-conscious practices, especially in the festive season that is synonymous with excesses. “We have noticed that the consumption pattern and waste patterns skyrocket during this time. Considering there are multiple festivals coming in succession, we felt it would be beneficial to talk about sustainable practices. This will be done in a manner that is practical so as to weave it easily into daily life,” says organiser Shipra Agarwal.

The workshop will include methods of gift wrapping, how to organise gatherings from a sustainable perspective and better management of excess food to avoid wastage. “We have tie-ups with various food banks and NGOs who will collect the excess food that is made at these events,” says Agarwal.

The session will include DIY experiments where the audience can engage in making decorations by hand, using paper and reusable giftwraps. “The audience can also indulge in the Japanese technique of Furoshiki where cloth and fabric like stoles and scarves are used as wrapping material,” she adds.  There is use of confetti but made by hand, using reusable materials and avoiding single-use plastic altogether. The audience can also learn how to use leftover flowers from the celebrations to make fresh-smelling potpourri.

Living the sustainable way

1.  Refuse single-use plastic and opt for glass bottles, cloth bags and cardboard boxes.
2.  Segregate waste into a system of three baskets: dry, wet and recyclable rubbish.
3.  Make compost at home as it helps in creating a carbon neutral environment.
