There's more to a city than meets the eye amid the rush of modern life. So here's a chance to take a pause and appreciate the beauty that Mumbai is and has been for years. The Kollective in collaboration with Bombay Connect curates Bombay 101 — The Tales of The Island City, a photo exhibition that aims to highlight the passion of a few talented architects of the city.

"Fine art photography goes beyond the literal representation of a scene or a subject. It expresses the photographer's vision and narrative, and is defined by the man as an artist. The camera, in this case, is merely a tool. Architecture is predominately a product of the geographical nature of the city, affecting the lifestyle and culture of its inhabitants. These infrastructural and structural developments over time have resulted in the evolution of the city from Bombay to Mumbai," says Kalyani Kale, interior designer and co-founder of The Kollective, a community organisation formed by and for design professionals. Kale and co-founder Gauri Khanna, who is an architect, are the brains behind the event.

Architects are people in love with cities they feel connected to. And more often than not, they express the same through pictures. This curated community studio aims to showcase these pictures, less as art but more as impressions of the artistes. "A lot of research has gone behind choosing the architects and we have picked 11 who stood out. The list includes visual artist Sameer Tawde, photographer Kunal Bhatia, and Akhil Kapadia, who is mainly known for his Facebook page Know Your Bombay, among others," explains Kale.

Aimed at community development, the pictures on display will also be up for sale. Besides, on one of the days, Deepa Nandi, the founder of RaahGeer Citywalks, will talk about her passion and inspiration behind her venture. The talk will be a "window to the unconventional and unique places in Mumbai that have stories which have seldom been heard before and visuals which will entice you to walk around the city and explore its underbelly".

Tawde will also be conducting a workshop on photography, where participants will learn how to operate a camera and understand how to compose a photograph. There will be lessons on the basics of using a camera, the play of light, camera angles and understanding the environment you shoot in.

"We really hope that this initiative culminates into a studio for the freelancers in the community, and a physical space for many more such community-driven initiatives," Kale says.
