We've been meaning to go to the Red Carpet Wax Museum for long, and we finally head to the spot during the Diwali vacations.
Before I say any more, here's the rider: I'm not into standing next to celebrities and clicking pictures - even real-life ones. Two, my last wax museum experience was in Lonavala, and it was ghastly. But, even as we head towards Red Carpet, I keep telling myself, "It can't be bad." We've done our homework (the website uses all the right words, interactive being one of them) and it seems like a cool place to head to. Prepped and excited, we step on to the red carpet at the entrance.
You get to stand next to Gandhiji and Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein. There are two sets of people ahead of us making the most of the place. I coax the kids to stand next to Barack Obama, say namaste to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, exchange reading lists with Nelson Mandela and jam with Michael Jackson. They do so, albeit self-consciously. Right at the start, there is an 'official' photographer who offers to take pics for you for a fee, but we politely decline.
Somehow, despite the star power, the theme falls flat. I keep darting into the lanes looking for excitement, hoping that the aha moment will strike us, but it doesn't. The most interesting, life-like wax figures are those of a dozing cop and a male photographer. I'm looking for an interactive experience, but perhaps it was so subtle that we didn't get it. Also, perhaps the kids and I are not selfie-mad like many of the other visitors.
The visit is over faster than we expect and when we are led out it feels like an anticlimax. Instructions like, "You can take pictures, but you cannot touch" by the ushers don't help either. Worse, a staffer constantly and closely follows us throughout the space, and we cannot relax. However, if you are into vacant-eyed fake celebrities and don't mind the odd selfie, you might actually like this place.
