This Christmas, down some shots and win awards for dancing in the tackiest sweater from your wardrobe
Remember that scene in How I Met Your Mother where Lilly and Marshall wore matching moose sweaters? Or the gaudy white-and-red-one that Jim Carrey put on in the 1994 cult comedy flick, Dumb And Dumber? If a similar, obnoxious sweater is gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe, it's time to celebrate it at The Ugly Sweater Party to be held on Christmas Eve.

"The 1980s was the golden age of ugly Christmas-ey sweaters," says Tanu Narang, co-owner of an Andheri pub that's hosting the party. "These tacky garments are now being re-appropriated from their perpetual spot in the wardrobe of a great-aunt or your teacher from junior school but in a hipster, oh-so-ironic way. Also, Christmas holidays are fraught with anxiety about the financial drain of gift-giving and the copious amounts of family interaction. What better way to de-stress than to throw on an obnoxious sweater and have a laugh?," she says.

The venue will be decked up with a Christmas tree, Santa sleighs and reindeer figurines. The party playlist features remixes of Christmas carols, English hits from the '80s and '90s, and recent pop tracks. The menu offers festive shots and cocktails, including Santa shots and Christmas martinis to get you in the mood. The team has curated a list of awards, including Most Likely to Get Arrested if Seen in Public and Most Likely to Go Viral on Social Media, to be given to those in the appropriate attire. Telltale signs of an ugly sweater, according to Narang, are the liberal use of white, green and red colours along with comically large depictions of snowmen, reindeer and Christmas trees as well as motifs like candy canes and elves. In case you don't own one, you can also go DIY using glitter fabric pens, and sewing on some jingle bells or safety pins, ribbons and bows. "Whether it constitutes a fashion faux pas or not, such a sweater conjures up warm and fuzzy memories of cosy family vacations in hill stations or winters in boarding school."
