A popular eatery in Lower Parel and a well-known collective of artistes and performers join hands to create an evening filled with storytelling and food

Why are rains romanticised, you may ask. But take a moment to consider this. They can wash away an entire slum, bring the promise of harvest, offer respite from the heat, and ruin a date. Yet, you cannot hold it together in the palm of your hand for longer than you are taking to read these 74 words. And that's what makes rains romantic, as anything ephemeral is.

To add a little sugar, storytelling and fried food to the romance this season, the folks at The Bombay Canteen and Kommune have come together to curate Stories from Under The Umbrella. "The monsoon can evoke memories, especially those relating to comfort. So, we have created a pakora and hot toddy menu to complement the weather and make you feel at home," says Sameer Seth, partner at the Lower Parel resto-bar.

Speaking of how they arrived at a versatile mix of storytellers. Hari Shankar, director of strategy, and storyteller at the artiste collective, says, "We try to bring together people from different walks of life to ensure a wholesome experience. Take Hussain Haidry, for example. The performance poet, lyricist, screenwriter is from a small town and has a different memory of the monsoon. Now, he can look at rains with a cup of chai in hand and appreciate it. For him, that is a privilege. So, his story will be bitter-sweet."

Shankar calls Rakesh Tiwari, a BPO professional and a Hindi spoken word artiste, who will also be performing, a wordsmith. "Give him any word and he has a story," Shankar explains. Singer and songwriter Aarifah Rebello is on the roster too. She will be jamming to some tunes. And there is model and actor Kubbra Sait (Kukoo from Sacred Games). Shankar says her story is as bizarre as it is beautiful. "I am a huge fan of the rains in Bombay, especially when I'm watching from my window, sharing stories, laughing and sipping chai. I'm excited about celebrating new stories and pakoras with new people," Sait tells us.
