With many dishes on the menu unavailable, a confused waiter and limited food choices, Swad Maharashtracha needs to do much more to justify its name

Restaurant review: Dig into Maharashtrian fare in Vashi

Ambiance: Warm

Vashi has a new eatery that serves Maharashtrian cuisine, situated in the commercially busy Vashi Plaza. Curious, we decided to head to this eatery to savour our home state's fare. Located on the second floor of the building is the two-storied restaurant Swad Maharashtracha where we headed into the air-conditioned 'family section'. The interiors were purely functional.

The limited menu includes snacks like Kanda Bhaji (Rs 50), Sabudana Vada (Rs 80), Alu Vadi (Rs 80), Egg Bhurji (Rs 80), Misal Pav (Rs 50) and other fast food options. The meal options include Veg Thali (Rs 120), the Agri Chicken Bhakri, Agri Mutton Bhakri, Bombil Bhuna Bhakri, Egg Curry Bhakri and a few North Indian dishes like Paneer Masala and Alu Tamatar Ki Sabzi.

On enquiry, we learnt that quite a few items on the menu were unavailable. We missed the Bharleli Vangi (Stuffed Eggplant), the Bombil (Bombay duck) and the Walachi Bhirde, which were not available. Incidentally, the Bombil was the only representative of Maharashtra's coastal cuisine on the menu.

Sol Kadi
The Sol Kadi didn't disappoint

We opted for the Agri Mutton Bhakri (Rs 170) and the Agri Chicken Bhakri (Rs 160). The meat was soft and both the gravies were spicy and tasty though not very different from each other. The Bhakri was hot and fresh, yet a bit harder than what we would have liked.

We also tried the famous home state indulgence, the Thali Peeth (Rs 60), which thankfully for us, was perfect and served with curd and a fiery green chili thecha (chutney). The Sol Kadi (Rs 60) was absolutely refreshing; and perfectly balanced the high chili and spice levels of our meal.

The restaurant was quite full on the day we dropped by. Our neighbours were upset about their order being mixed up; our order, however, had no such glitches.

The Zunka, in the Zunka Bhakar (Rs 100) was something we liked very much but the Kothambir Vadi (R120) had too much salt. None of the sweet dishes including the Gud Poli, Kawa Poli and the Shrikhand were available.
