Restaurant Review: Cosy cafe to chill out in Dadar

Bibiji Ki Achari Khichdi

Grandmama's Cafe
Food: Good
Service: Slow
Ambiance: Warm

Even a few weeks ago, meeting someone in Dadar for coffee seemed like a bad idea. Despite the central location, there was no choice in terms of spaces for good food and relaxed conversations. Things might look up with the opening of Grandmama’s Cafe that replaced the deserted El Cafe. Located beside Pritam Restaurant and Bar (both are under the same management), the space is large, and includes an al fresco option overlooking the buzzing junction. With its white walls and wooden interiors, Grandmama’s Cafe looks less like a cafe and more like a cosy drawing room.

When we requested for the menu, we were surprised to be handed over a couple of stapled sheets of paper — the menu was still at the printers, we were told. But this didn’t deter us from combing the menu. Our picks were Bibiji Ki Achari Khichdi (Rs 150) from the Indian fare, Tuna Sandwich (Rs 200), Espresso Americano coffee (Rs 80), and Spanish Hot Chocolate (Rs 110). Having noticed the well-priced khichdi made us do a little jig. Our joy was short-lived as it arrived in a tiny ceramic pot. Though delicious, the portions were stingy.

To make amends, we called for a 10-inch Barbeque Chicken Pizza (Rs 210). The pizza was yum, with the right balance and toppings. Luckily for us, the Tuna Sandwich was a hit. Served with brown bread and fries on the side, it made us forget our bad run with the khichdi. Both turned out as we had imagined. We are no coffee experts, but we strongly recommend their strong Black Americano if you’re in the area, and need a coffee kick.

On another occasion when we dropped by, we sampled their Kheema Pav (Rs 210) and Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (R200). Both got our vote.

When it came to desserts, we tried Tiramisu (Rs 150) and Almond and Lemon Cake (Rs 165), and both were disappointing. On our second visit, we tried the Carrot Cake and Nutty Nutela and those were also way off mark. Apart from the odd hiccup, this eatery, can stamp its presence if it maintains consistency.
