It appears like the overindulgent, overloaded, calorie-laden freakshakes are here to stay. An Australian import, this sugary drink-and-dessert mashup is essentially a milkshake topped with cream, cakes, sauces, sprinkles, chocolate and other sweets, usually served in mason jars. For the next two weeks, a city restaurant, 145 All Day Cafe and Bar in Kala Ghoda, is hosting a festival to pay tribute to this Instagram trend.

The Freakshake Festival is set to be a treat for the eyes and taste buds. "When we started, milkshakes were an important part of our menu. They've also been very popular with customers. Through this festival, we wanted to take these milkshakes to the next level, in terms of presentation and flavours. So, we decided on freakshakes, a more intense version of it," says co-owner Ishaan Bahl.

The freakshakes menu has comforting flavours, but with a slight twist. "We went with things people like eating — strawberry, cookie dough, mango, Oreo, and mint-milk chocolate," he adds. Even the glasses in which the freakshakes are served come decorated with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles. The Brownie Waffles Freakshake is studded with a flavoured waffle and chocolate chip brownies. The bestselling Salted Caramel Milkshake is turned into a freakshake with the addition of salted caramel brownies, and fresh mangoes are used in the Mango Cheesecake Freakshake.

"We are currently working on an alcoholic version called the Baileys Freakshake (Rs 395) that will be served with vanilla ice cream. It will be a sinful dessert, with vanilla ice cream adding a nice smoothness to the potent drink," adds Bahl.

Those who want to experiment can try Eat Shakes — milkshakes in edible chocolate bottles, in flavours like Parle-G, salted caramel and mint.
