Mumbai food: These ice cream joints will satisfy those summer midnight cravings

Pumpkin patch
If you're in Bandra, and craving ice cream, visit Scoopalicious, an ice cream truck that operates across from St Peter's Church on Hill Road.

The brainchild of Roysten Misquitta of the Bombay Food Truck Company, Scoopalicious serves up some bizarre flavours that actually work. Try the Pumpkin Spice, Fennel, Caramel Popcorn and Black Sesame. If you're feeling even more experimental, opt for the bo-ozy Rum Cake flavour.

All the ice creams are 100 per cent organic and vegetarian. Misquitta also serves a range of vegan ice creams, including Gajar Halwa, Toffee Banana, and Watermelon Chaat Masala Sorbet.

Mango mania

King Alphonso ice cream

Today, Ice Cream Works has expanded all over the city and beyond, yet the Shivaji Park outlet, which was the first to open in 2012, remains a favourite among loyalists. Open till past midnight, this parlour serves as the perfect pit-stop after a late dinner.
The staff is enthusiastic and will ensure you try as many flavours as possible before you make your decision (believe us, it's not easy). Pick from interesting flavours like the quirky Calcutta Meetha Paan, the creamy Chocolate To Die For, and the decadent Black Is Black.

And, now that mango season is finally upon us, you can also try a range of ice creams that celebrate the king of fruits, such as King Alphonso, Mango Chikki Kulfi, and Mango Cheesecake, to name a few.

Jaggery on the mind

Classic Jaggery ice cream

“Until now, we've been focusing on home deliveries, but our parlour opens tomorrow,” says Vivek Kashelkar, co-founder of two-and-a-half-year-old venture Scoopy Do. Their specialty is jaggery-based ice creams. “With just jaggery as the base, we can make a range of flavours like Thandai, Fig, Nutmeg and Jackfruit.” However, it was only this year, after a lot of trial-and-error, that the team managed to come up with a mango version. Kashelkar says that the challenge was getting the balance right because the jaggery overpowered mango's flavour.

Now, they have also introduced sugar-based flavours such as Tender Coconut, Black Grapes, Fresh Vanilla and Chocochips. Although deliveries are undertaken between Dahisar and Andheri, Scoopy Do will come up to Lower Parel at an additional cost. They will continue taking orders even once the Goregaon parlour opens.

Spice, spice baby

Green Chilli ice cream

If you live in Mumbai and haven't been to Bachelorr's yet, you're not really a Mumbaikar. The Chowpatty joint has been feeding hungry teens and adults alike since 1932, and serves everything from thick shakes to fruit juices and sandwiches. They also have a page's worth of ice cream flavours, but their most popular offering appears to be the suspicious-sounding Green Chilli flavour. Don't be horrified yet. The confection has a sweet, creamy profile which settles on your palate, gently giving way to a slow burn that is far from unpleasant.

At 45, Chowpatty Sea Face, Marine Drive.
