A new Bollywood-themed resto-bar goes the whole hog with filmy décor, cocktails and eats

Is this Bollywood-themed resto-bar in Navi Mumbai worth a visit? Find out

As we step into the hallway of the newly opened Nau Se Barah resto-bar in Navi Mumbai, the decor instantly transports us to a Bollywood film studio. Decked with photo frames celebrating Hindi cinema, and unforgettable dialogues like "Teja main hoon, mark idhar hai" to a complete wall dedicated to Gangs of Wasseypur - this filmy affair is quite unlike any other we have seen at the many Bollywood-themed places in Mumbai.

The theme continues to the bar, where the stools are replaced with swings. The menu is all-out Bollywood, too, and leaves us amused as we pick between Ek Tha Tiger prawns and saamne ye corn aya burger. While we aren't as lucky on the day we visit, but following the recent trend of restaurants doubling as performance venues, Nau Se Barah also hosts live acts.

Starter innovation
Can broccoli ever be not-boring? The broccoli barfi (Rs.295) will make you say yes. Mousse cakes made of the humble veggie, garnished with burnt garlic and curry leaves and served with a pink cream-based dip, this delish avatar offers a refreshing alternative to other veg starter staples. Giving a desi touch to the starters menu are the tiger prawns (Rs.595). Coated with a red hot masala, grilled to perfection in the tandoor, they are a must try.

Hat-ke cocktails
You can't go wrong when you mix vodka with guava, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper, and serve it with a chilly rim. With the perfect hint of spice in each sip, the guava mary (Rs.295) makes for an ideal accompaniment with the sizzling prawns. Ice-cream based vodka popsicle dunked in a mojito-flavoured drink is what makes the alcoholic poptail (Rs.295) an interesting variant.

The popsicle is lined with mint leaves, and the minty aroma persists even after an hour, as the popsicle leisurely melts into the drink.

Oriental dampener
We think of giving the oriental cuisine a try after the Indian section wins our vote. However, the decision is a let-down.

Ek Tha Tiger prawns

The nasi goreng or Indonesian stir-fried rice served with chicken skewers (Rs.420), and mao chao noodles served with paneer chilly (R300) taste bland and lack the classic oriental aroma. As a reminder of the venue's theme, the bill arrives in a tiny briefcase that says, "Apne saare paise mere hawaale kardo". A fitting climax.
