Berries and cereal can be used as toppings
A breakfast staple, a hassle-free snack, a reliable midnight munchie — the humble toast is a giving companion at any time of the day. And after Dalgona coffee, banana bread and sourdough, recently, the social media kitchens of TikTok and Instagram have jazzed up the regular toast. Enter, yoghurt toast or custard toast — the answer to our prayer for dessert for breakfast, without losing out on nutrients.

The quick-fix recipe that’s taken over the Internet does not involve toiling over getting a custard right. Instead, it just comprises these ingredients: Greek yoghurt, eggs, maple syrup or honey, and toast. While the basic version is a sweet mix of these ingredients, netizens have given the dish their own spin with tiramisu, dates, seasonal fruits, and eggless and vegan options. Malabar Hill-based baker Kanika Singh, who runs Baked By K (@bakedbykofficial) patisserie, shares that the dish is the perfect way to kick-start one’s day.

“When the custard toast trend went viral, I knew I had to give it a shot. This was something that looked fun to make with ingredients that are probably already in your kitchen. It makes for a high-protein, minimal-carb power breakfast, topped with fruits. I found that this recipe can be made unique and customised to serve as your morning fix, with a hot cuppa,” she says, adding that it also doubles up as dessert. Here are a few mix-and-match combinations from Singh on whipping up yoghurt custard toast:

>> Try regular Greek yoghurt with banana, honey and cinnamon, topped with walnuts.
>> Or you can go for blueberry Greek yoghurt, topped with your favourite berries and honey.
>> You can also use regular Greek yoghurt with vanilla essence and some chocolate chips.
>> Topping it with a high-fibre cereal can add some crunch and extra nutrition to your breakfast custard toast.
Custard toast
Ingredients
>> 1 egg >> 1 tsp honey
>> 90 g Greek yoghurt
>> Dash of cinnamon
>> Preferred bread slices
>> Strawberries or berries or bananas (any topping of choice)
>> Sprinkle of sugar
Method
Mix together the egg, honey, regular or flavoured Greek yoghurt and a dash of cinnamon to make the custard. Use your preferred bread [I used multigrain but you can also use sourdough]. Use your fingers to dent the centre of the bread and top it with the custard filling. Top this with strawberries, berries or bananas, and a sprinkle of sugar. You can also add some sesame seeds for crunch. Bake it at 180 degrees Celsius for about eight to 10 minutes. Take it out, drizzle some honey and enjoy.
