Why this new bar in BKC is worth a visit

Most married men, after a long day at work, would like to go home to a good wife. And now, there’s one, even for the unmarried! We are talking about The Good Wife — the new bar in the heart of Bandra Kurla Complex, one that promises to pamper you with ‘good food, good spirits and good vibes’.

For a place that opened its doors to the public barely a fortnight ago, the bar buzzes with energy on a Monday night. A young group occupies the high tables and chairs in the bar area. The giggles and laughs add to the vibrancy of the place that is heightened by the pop music playing in the background. The plush sofas and comfortable chairs at the restobar are occupied by visitors whose interest oscillates between the food and drinks on the table, and their partners, who sparkle with life.

The cocktails have been prepared under the guidance of mixologist Dimitri Lezinska, the co-host of Discovery Channel’s series Cocktail Kings and so, expectations are ‘high’ even before we place our order. It is Lezinska himself, who suggests The Good Wife (Rs 390) and The Wolf Of BKC (Rs 303). Is he alluding to me and my partner — the beauty and the beast — we joke.

The mixologist laughs and sprays the former with a vodka-based spray in black cardamom and the latter with a rose aroma. “After the visual sense, it is the olfactory senses which have to be stimulated,” he says. The former, a whiskey sour with black cardamom and orange is aromatic and fresh, while the latter, an orange vodka-based drink with raspberry puree, lime and passion fruit, is slightly bitter, but utterly refreshing.

Chef Pankaj Bhingarde makes a short trip from the kitchen to our table, to suggest we try the Forest Mushrooms Filo Wontons (Rs 315). The feta and mushroom stuffing are light and flaky and we devour them within the next 60 seconds, but the flavours linger on our taste buds a little longer. The Chicken Gyoza (Rs 345) resembles momos and does little to create a lasting impression. But one bite and we hear it scream with flavour.

The chicken filling, flavoured with lemongrass, kaffir lime, fish and oyster sauce, in steamed and pan fried gyoza sheets, packs a punch along with the soy chilli dip. The Thai Prawn Kataifi (Rs 395), served next, are shrimp balls, fried in kataifi pastry (a versatile pastry either baked or fried). The fragrance of lemongrass is overwhelming and the shrimp filling, flavoured with red curry paste and thai spices leaves us heady. Our second round of drinks arrives. The Spiced Swizzle (Rs 303), a spiced-rum concoction with lime, mint and sugar, which Lezinska sprays with an amla spritz, is invigorating, while Mrs Robinson (Rs 303), a vodka-based drink boasts of a tangy flavour that goes well with the food.

The Good Wife is one who’ll never let you leave without sweet memories. In our case, it was the Vanilla Pannacotta (Rs 275) that did the job. Here’s one wife with whom, in all probability, you will never experience the seven-year itch.
