When a restaurant leaves a smile on your face for various reasons, you make a mental note to come back. Mirchi and Mime at Powai is one such eatery. It's one of the many restaurants in the city that serve food from different regions of India, tweaked either to please the metro palate or to match a fine-dining experience. The USP of the place, though, is the waiting staff who are speech and hearing impaired.

So, one can order either by using sign language (a guide is printed on the menu along with a briefing of how it works by the manager), point at what you wish for from the menu or simply place an order with the manager who speaks fluent English. We did a mix of both, and there were no mix-ups in our order.

Fine Dori Kebab

We ordered Rocksalt Margarita (Rs 400, all prices exclusive of taxes), and Berry Pomegranate Granita (Rs 150) from the mocktails section. For starters, we picked Crispy Bacon and Baby Spinach Salad (Rs 185) and the Waterchestnut and Corn Tikki (Rs 185). The taste of the alcohol was overpowering in the margarita; the granita was a lip-smacking, fresh drink that complemented the lime and raspberry vinaigrette in our salad. The succulent tikkis tasted even better when dunked in four desi dips given on the side.

Next, we ordered Dori Kebab (Rs 315), which is served on a skewer. The kebab was cooked kakori style with soft minced meat. Adding onions or bread could've enhanced that dish.

From the vegetarian mains, we opted for Dahi Kofta (Rs 275) with a plain roti (Rs 35). The delicate-as-petals koftas made for a good option instead of regular paneer gravies.

Our meal ended with Desi Cheesecake and Nutella and Toffee Tarte Fine (both Rs 185). The cheesecake was ordinary, but the Tarte Fine took the cake. A section of white chocolate and one of toffee; we could've ordered another round, without a blink.
