Shippy's Restaurante is a welcome addition to Lower Parel as it caters to the light-pocketed. Full-flavoured, the burger-sandwich-baguette fare is promising but lacks vision

Lower Parel, with its skyline dotted with under-construction skyscrapers and office-goers, deserves eateries to suit all pockets. One such newbie with modest furnishings and menu that has opened shop in the area is called Shippy's Restaurante. Though the naval theme is obvious, the food is centred on one sole thing — comfort. From baguettes to frankies, sandwiches, burgers and more, the snack-y bites are good when on the go or meant for office breaks, as we found out.

Grilled Chicken Panini with Cheese was yum but missed the barbequed chicken bits; French Fries tossed in a Sweet Chilli sauce had a skewed sweet-and-spice balance. Pics/Kaushik Thanekar

We placed our money on a Caprese Potato Salad (Rs 129), French Fries tossed in Sweet Chilli Sauce (Rs 99), Garlic Bread with Cheese (Rs 89), Hawaiian Baguette (Rs 99), Grilled Chicken Panini with Cheese (Rs 139) and a Shippy’s Non Veg Burger (Rs 119) for a takeaway, and it was delivered on time. The starter, Garlic Bread with Cheese had a peculiar twist of halved cheese slices that hadn’t melted with ease yet the garlic flavour was appropriately palpable. The fries, on the other hand, were saccharine to the point of reminding one of jalebis and not in a good way.

The salad had a healthy mesh of baby potatoes, rocket leaves, onions and tomatoes, had been promised with a pesto and mozzarella cheese dousing, but something was amiss. Anyhow, forking in, salty was the only flavour we registered while the standard mayonnaise dressing held the elements together. The Grilled Chicken Panini with Cheese was flavourful, and spicy yet the chicken was mostly mush, overpowered by the flavours of the fried egg. Our wistfulness continued in Shippy’s Non Veg Burger too, that had almost identical flavours stuffed in but had a better portion of the regular fries.

The Hawaiian Baguette, that on the menu, was about tomato relish on a bed of lettuce and cheese was all mixed up. Though the filling was generous and one sandwich is enough to keep you full for a long time, we got sautéed onions with cheese and lettuce instead of the tomato. Shippy’s Restaurante offers several flavours rehashed in different avatars. This sailor may have a smooth sailing if they toss up new techniques and ingredients.
