Bun Maska is the quintessential Bombay dish that had once been a mandatory order at any Irani café in the city. It is indisputable that each person who has dunked his heaven of fluffy bread with greased in-betweens of Polson butter has a different memory of the simple dish.

This small cafe-like space in Oshiwara is an ode to all this, and more. We walk in to the space that has an airy al fresco section with wooden chairs and granite tabletops. The inside is typically an open kitchen with limited seating. The outlet isn’t reminiscent of the typical Irani Café; in fact, it has the décor of a modern café, which might disappoint a few patrons.

The Vada Pav is served in brown bread and is delicious but the Vada is too small

Nevertheless, glancing through the menu, we discover that it offers a variety of Buns (the classic Bun Maska, Bun Jam, Honey & Sugar Bun). There are also other dishes like Jalapeno Poppers and Mozzarella Sticks that weren’t available. The place also has a limited drinks menu right now.

We ordered a Bun Maska (Rs 50), a French Fries (Rs 75), a Nutella Bun (R100), a Cold Chocolate (Rs 75) and a Spicy Vada Pav (Rs 40). The place was manned by one server and thus, takes some time in getting an order ready. Plus, it’s only two weeks old. Our Bun Maska arrived delicate and oozing with Amul butter while the Nutella Bun varied with one spread of Nutella along with butter.

The buns are cotton-soft and delicious. The Vada Pav bears the same delight though lacks the spicy Garlic chutney; the portion size wasn’t generous like street version. The French Fries were limp and we suspect, straight from the freezer to the fryer. The Cold Chocolate was first served to us hot, and when arranged to be cold, was watery. A lovely place for a chat and a read, yet the menu and service need to be worth your money for the owners to earn their bread and butter.
