A craving for sinful dessert or a yearning for a savoury snack -- the newly-opened Leo’s Boulangerie in Andheri caters to both desires

New Andheri eatery offers sugar, spice, and everything nice

It’s impossible to stay in Mumbai and not be familiar with Leopold Cafe. So iconic is the eatery that people living in the suburbs often wish they didn’t live so far away from the Colaba restaurant. But, now, we suburbanites have been compensated, in a way, with the opening of the second branch of Leo’s Boulangerie in Andheri, with the first one being in Colaba. The eatery is owned by Farzad Jehani, who also co-owns Leopold Café.

Once inside the cosy little bakery, a week after it opened its doors to the public on November 1, our eyes linger on the delectable spread of pastries, cookies, cakes, cupcakes and breads, while the delicious aroma of baked goodies wafts through the air. Picking five of the best from the lot is not a task we enjoy, since we love all that we see and taste, but here goes:

Chicken Stuffed Bread (Rs 45 each)

Chicken Stuffed Bread (Rs 45 each): Served in small portions, this chicken stuffed bread sure packs in a punch when it comes to flavours. It is delicious — the stuffing, made of chicken cooked in a white sauce and herbs, is then baked inside a savoury piece of bread. With a sprinkling of cheese and herbs on top, what you get is a simple, non-spicy and a great tea-time snack.

Blueberry Cheesecake (Rs 90)

Blueberry Cheesecake (Rs 90): Easily one of the best blueberry cheesecakes we’ve tasted, it comes with a liberal spread of blueberry jam on top of a creamy cheesecake. “We import frozen blueberries from Belgium and make our in-house jam,” explains Rahul Singh, executive chef. Chunky bits of blueberry enhance the flavour of the cheesecake, made using a combination of different cheeses.

Ambrosia (Rs 130)

Ambrosia (Rs 130): An orange dome of a pastry is presented to us and we can’t make out its texture until we dig in with our spoons. The cutlery sinks into the pastry, thus confirming to us that the white chocolate mousse inside is soft and creamy. A pleasant surprise is sprung in the form of the exotic fruits mixed puree inside, which lends the dessert a fruity undertone.

Walnut Pie (Rs 150)

Walnut Pie (Rs 150): Roasted walnuts mixed with in-house caramel sauce, sprinkled generously over the pie — what’s not to like? On top of that, there is a chocolate ganache plate which, once melted, blends in smoothly and deliciously with the pie.

Leo’s Cheesecake (Rs 110)

Leo’s Cheesecake (Rs 110): Yet another cheesecake but we figure, there are not too many places that deliver a great cheesecake. This one does and how! The presentation, with the whipped cream and sliced fruits, looks good and that’s not all. The cheesecake is light and airy. All its takes is one spoonful and we know why they decided to give this dish their signature.
