Fed up of looking for new, groovy places to chill in Colaba? This Pune restaurant's Mumbai outpost is a good bet for you to find what you seek

Mumbai food: Colaba's new outpost is a foodies delight!

Pune restaurant

Our quest to find the right watering hole for the ideal post-work plan in every neighbourhood is filled with ups and downs. We've even contemplated hitting the road to Pune just to park ourselves at one of its trippy breweries or bars. In a bid to make things easier for us, Pune's The Urban Foundry (TUF) will be opening its doors in  Colaba this Sunday.

It has replaced the much-missed Ellipsis. Co-owner Suryabhan Shinde (who runs the place along with Hrishikesh Shinde and Sangram Shirole) reveals that they wanted to maintain a vibe similar to the Pune property, but had to make subtle changes in the menu and the interiors to match the Mumbai foodie's taste buds.

The decor sports an industrial feel, but there is a chic touch that pulls it back from veering towards the grungy garage-pub category (plus points for adding bag-latching hooks by the bar).

Shinde also tells us that they will only play music from the West and no Bollywood. The menu has various additions when compared to the Pune outpost. There's a sushi section and other Asian dishes that the owners feel might work for Mumbai.

Knuckle up

We start with knuckle up (Rs400), their best-selling cocktail, and black is black (Rs500), a rather stylish gin-based cocktail made using activated charcoal that is surprisingly refreshing.

Those who love large tiki cocktails should call for the first man (Rs400), a delicious rum cocktail made using tropical fruit juices. Spicy avocado roll sushi (Rs250) and shiitake galouti (Rs325) help us start our meal on light flavours, the galouti kebabs with a hint of raspberry being our favourite for the texture. Another hit is the frozen dahi bhalle ki kulfi (Rs305), served with a drizzle of chutneys.

From the mains, dabba gosht (Rs450) makes for a decadent meaty meal and the blue cheese bacon kulcha (Rs450), served with makhani mayonnaise, is an indulgence with its generous filling and liberal grease.

Try their Japanese pizzas, called so for the simplicity of the ingredients, which are actually served on a herbed lavash-style base. Our favourite section, though, is desserts, the frozen gajar halwa (Rs250) and watermelon rasmalai carpaccio (Rs250) being a great twist on the classic Indian desserts.
