Haute cuisine meets its match: beer

Ferran Adri , world-renowned chef of El Bulli in Spain, teamed up with Spanish commercial brewer Estrella Damm to create the world's first beer concocted to enhance your fine dining experience, Estrella Damm Inedit ($9.99/ 7.56).

However beer lovers worldwide have mixed thoughts on the "witbier style saison" that is to be chilled tableside and served half-full in a white wine glass. Here are some comments from the site RateBeer.com:

Rand from Switzerland posted on August 3: "Bottle 50 cl from El Cortes del Ingl s in Marbella (Spain). All the visual characteristics of a white, slightly more amber. Flavor orange, freshness and yeast. Taste of wheat and yeast, rather than fruity touches. Very orangy, and coriander stands out well. Ideal and refreshing after a day 'a la playa'."

Whereas JensenTaster from Denmark wrote on July 28: "I now understand why chefs are so unwilling to work with beer in their job. Because if this is the best the founder of "El Buli" could come up with... what should the others do? A slightly thin and soft wit, actualy the label tells it all; a mix of pilsner and witbeer. No re[a]l pomerans {bitter orange] or coriander, no real hopping or dryness. One of the more boring styleblends."

Others like mcberko from Vancouver, Canada concluded the beer was "decent" and BelgBeerGeek from Antwerp in Belgium said it smelled like "bubblegum" and had a "grainy aftertaste."

According to LVMH's global luxury lifestyle portal Nowness on August 4, beer is all over the place in terms of "taste and drinkability" with "the recent, much-reported release of Scottish brewery BrewDog's 'End of History'-notable for its 55% alcohol content, $765 price tag and the fact that each one of the 12 available bottles comes neatly encased in the carcass of a rodent," and "white ales and Belgian saisons."

The End of History is currently sold out and was listed as ufffd500/ 603 (stoat) and ufffd700/ 844 (grey squirrel).

Belgian saisons, summer harvest low alcohol refreshing brews, are often compared to fine wines, to learn more take a look at the blog Drink Dogma: https://drinkdogma.com/summer-beer-belgian-saisons/
