Food: Try chilled soup shot at a new restaurant in Khar

It was love at first sight when we stepped into the newly opened The Korner House (which replaces Nido), located around a bend at Union Park. Presenting a modern, chic vibe, the al fresco section of the 200-seater space comprised comfy sofas and swing chair-like seating in grey-and-green tones, polished wooden tables and natural light streaming through the stems. “All the furniture has been imported from Bali,” owner Prashant Gunjalkar (of Royalty nightclub) told us. Snowflakes, wreaths and a lovely white Christmas tree added to the festive vibe. We picked a spot inside, beside palatial candle stands (lit-up during evenings) and pored over the menu that comprises modern European fare with healthy twists.

Soup shot, anyone?
We began with Roasted Pumpkin (Rs 325). The thick soup blending mascarpone cheese, chives and spiced harissa was a perfect meal-starter. The restaurant also offers soup shots, where mini portions of three cold soups are served in shot glasses. Innovative, we thought and tried the Chilled Melon Berry (Rs 355), infused with refreshingly tangy flavours.

Nachni matters
With an in-house bakery and patisserie, the restaurant offers a multitude of flatbread, burger and sandwich options. The Mushroom (Rs 365) featured crunchy nachni flatbread topped with tasty wine-braised fungi. Thumbs up to the nachni-mushroom combo. Meanwhile, BBQ Pork (Rs 405) flatbread scored due to the smoky flavours oozing from the succulent meat glazed with perfect homestyle barbeque sauce.

We bit into the Blue Cheese Lamb Burger (Rs 695) and a burst of flavours greeted us, as the caramelised onions blended with the right amount of blue cheese and a chunky lamb patty — all packed into melt-in-the-mouth buns. We washed it down with the breezy Spiced Berry Mojito (Rs 650) that included rum-marinated fruits.

Chicken Spinwheels

The sweet mango mayonnaise coupled with the sour kasundi mustard sauce made the Ahana Prawns ('545) a must-try. Meanwhile, dotted with a variety of bell pepper coulis and micro greens, the Chicken Spinwheels ('465) was high on taste and presentation.

Stuffed Crepes
Stuffed Crepes

From the mains, we liked Stuffed Crepes (Rs 695). Topped with saffron cream, the veggie-filled crepes (that resembled potlis) were perched on a bed of couscous. The steamed crepes made up for the lack of flavours in the couscous while the
rich and creamy sauce added to the taste.

Sated, we skipped dessert for another visit, considering the restaurant serves a different dessert menu every day. Starting next week, it will also include a special high tea menu (4 pm to7 pm) featuring teacakes and freshly baked scones. We’ve already slotted another visit in our New Year calendar.
