MexiloKo’s food is almost as varied and exciting as its owners. Started by four friends — restaurateur Sameer Uttamsingh, former JP Morgan director Deb Mukherjee, investment banker Harsh Patel and event management firm owner Kainaz Mehta — Mexiloko is all set to open its first outlet in Colaba, on the causeway.

The Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) is nattily decorated with flat-screen monitors displaying the menu. A few days shy of opening its doors, we walked in to do the hard work — be the guinea pigs and sample the cuisine before it hits the market.
Mukherjee and Mehta explained the concept behind the place and how they hope to reach out to the office crowd. Uttamsingh, meanwhile, was organising the food.
First up was the Lam Con Carne Empanada — a lamb mince coated in the in-house special con carne marinade. We tried it with the Firecracker spicy salsa. Don’t be fooled by its cool orange colour. This one will make a grown man cry. But it was awesome and the golden brown empanada melted in our mouth. The Cheese and Basic quesadilla was not chewy and the jalapeno dip tasted nice.
As we sipped on a glass of cola the large burritos arrived. We tried the Lime and Coriander Fish Burrito. The marinated pan-seared Basa was layered with Mexican rice, tomato salsa and cheese. Honestly this qualified as a full meal by itself.
Mexiloko will serve desserts too, such as Churros with chocolate sauce. We are full and promise to try this one next time.
While the quesadillas and empanadas will set you back by between Rs 120 and Rs 140, the burritos will sell for anything between Rs 140 and Rs 180. Mexiloko is planning to open branches in Andheri, Malad and Navi Mumbai soon. Reason enough for some people to start celebrating.
