Here's why a Mumbai-based artist trips on creating cool and intricate Coldplay doodles for your wall

It was all yellow on her canvas

Often distracted in lectures during the Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) course at a Bandra college, 24-year-old Kalyani Nerurkar would put pen to paper to doodle her thoughts, which gave birth to her Instagram page, Doodle Riot. In the last month, the page has been filled with intricate, colourful doodles — each a lyrical illustration of a Coldplay song. These posts are part of her recently launched Doodling Coldplay Project.

"On a rainy afternoon, I was listening to The Scientist on loop. So, I ended up illustrating the song lyrics with doodles. I shared it on social media and surprisingly, got a lot of positive feedback. That's how the project started," says the artist, who has illustrated over 10 Coldplay tracks, including Fix You, Yellow, Clocks and even the underrated Always In My Head.

Why Coldplay?
"Their music fires up multiple emotions in me, all at once. I feel happy, amazed, inspired, nostalgic, blessed, wonderful and refreshed every time I plug in my headphones and listen to Chris Martin's soothing vocals and the band's mellow yet uplifting tunes. Each song is like a beautiful kaliedoscope of colours, emotions and feelings. Coldplay are a work of art. So inspiration comes effortlessly," gushes Nerurkar, who uses fine-line pens, colour pencils, watercolours, markers, gel pens and sketchpens to create detailed art pieces, often taking over a week to finish each.

While the prints are available for sale, Nerurkar also offers to customise illustrations based on a song of your choice. In the coming months, you may also find doodles of more Coldplay tracks like Strawberry Swing, Up & Up, Magic and A Sky Full of Stars on her Instagram page.

Always In Your Head: The song is an ode to the first flush of love, and I’ve tried to create a psychedelic galaxy of romance in a sepia tone, she says.

Paradise:âu00c2u0080u00c2u0088This track from Mylo Xyloto instantly struck a chord with my lost childlike imagination. I wanted to convey a story of a little girl who dreams of paradise. I have depicted the mundane cycle of life through black, bold lines) while the utopian world with use of bright shades of blue, red, orange and yellow.

Clocks: This illustration of the song from A Rush Of Blood To The Head is one of the most detailed pieces in the project. I found it extremely tricky to depict the song visually. I tried to retain the feel of the beautiful piano melody, which echoes in your mind ceaselessly once you hear it, with the use of black ink and a pop of fiery yellow.
