Are you a single parent who finds it difficult to find a like-minded group that you and your kid can comfortably hang out with? Join a meet-up organised by iSingleParent, a community initiative that helps create
experiences for single parent families across India.
"The idea was to bring single parents and their kids together through activities. I am a single mother, and my friend, who is the co-founder, was raised by a single mum. My 10-year-old daughter and I love doing outdoorsy things, but I realised that due to the stigma attached to being a single parent, it is difficult for us to join other people," says Richa Sharma, who started this initiative in January.
After realising that many other single parents face the same issues, Sharma saw the need to just have a community that brings them together through fun meet-ups, holidays and camping trips.

She shares, "Most often, when a couple separates, gets divorced, or even when one partner passes away, the other gets socially cut off, whether from family or friends. While the parent learns to deal with it, it’s difficult for the child, who now has limited social interaction. When they come together at such meet-ups, they are comfortable knowing there are others just like them."
Sharma explains that while there are a few groups on Facebook for single parents in the country, all of them are closed, which means you have to request to join them. "Moreover, most of these groups focus on single mums, not dads. We cater to both. We also have members from across India, so our activities are spread across the country, not restricted to Mumbai."
Single Parent has organised four meet-ups so far, as well as an affordable holiday to Goa. Their next holiday is planned for August, and it will be a camping trip near Mumbai.
