A couple of years ago, when the Bajaj brothers launched the innovative Pee Buddy, a disposable device to help women stand and urinate in public spaces, the idea was met with mixed reactions. Thousands of kilometres away, in Austria, the Green Alternative party proposed a similar idea last week, and even conducted a workshop to train their women. Social media couldn't stop having a laugh, Andrea Kucera, the Austrian physiotherapist, who conducted the workshop, said in an email interview. "People are not well-informed and therefore, make jokes about it," she added.
Nonetheless, she maintains that it's important that women know how to take a leak, standing. Wheelchair-bound, trapped at a concert, sailing, or perhaps, the mostly likely, stranded with no toilet in site, what do you do? Kucera suggested a do-it-yourself (DIY) pee funnel with a simple sheet of paper.
All you need to do is cut the paper, preferably glossy sheet, as per the template in the diagram and fold it in the middle. Fold a small slip of paper on one side (see diagram). This is where the paper overlaps when you fold it together. You can either take glue to stick it together or an adhesive tape to fix it and give it a round form. "It will end up looking like a cone with one big and another small opening on each side," says Kucera. Your pee funnel is ready.
