Airlines upgrade fliers hoping they will convert economy class travellers to business
Airlines upgrade fliers hoping they will convert economy class travellers to business. They are also used as loyalty awards to say thank you for flying with them. And sometimes, upgrading helps the airline get out of a spot it lands itself in, thanks to overbooking a flight.
Join the airlines' frequent flyer programme. All airlines have one. Joining is free and normally means points gained for each mile of travel earned, bonuses and goodies. If the airline needs to upgrade, they check who is a member.
It's worth being nice to the person who checks you in. They can help by putting in a message into the system that says you would appreciate being included if there are to be any upgrades.
It helps at this stage, if you are dressed smart. No one wants to upgrade a slashed-jeans, out-of-bed tee sporting passenger.
Good luck.
