Relationship: Looking for a date online? Here are 5 things you must know first

online dating

Beware of fake profiles: Are you a sensitive and emotionally less intelligent person? If yes, you may be at an increased risk of being duped in online dating, finds a recent study conducted by researchers in the UK, adding that rise in the number of people using online dating has also increased fraud. Perpetrators of dating scams simply set up false profiles on dating websites with the sole purpose of extracting money from their victims. They use sophisticated techniques and eventually may begin to know exactly the sort of people to target and how to manipulate them, the researchers noted.

Make sure your online hook-up is 'clean': A large number of newly HIV diagnosed men in the US believe that they contracted the infection from a partner they met online, a study conducted by researchers at an American university for over a period of 3 years has found. More than 60 percent of men in a US state who have sex with men (MSM) diagnosed with HIV in 2013 reported meeting sexual partners online in the preceding year, the findings showed. In 2013, 74 residents from the US state of Rhode Island were newly diagnosed with HIV. Three in five were gay, bisexual, or other MSM, and of those 43 people, 22 told researchers they believe a man they met online gave them the virus.

Ensure your safety: A recent survey conducted in the UK revealed that the number of people reporting being raped by someone they met on a dating app or website has risen six-fold in five years. There were 184 rape allegations in 2014, up from 33 in 2009, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said. It said 85 percent of the rape victims were women and of these, 42 percent were aged between 20 to 29, and 24 percent were between 40 and 49, a major news agency reported.

Men should learn the gift of the gab: Men need to upgrade their conversation skills for online dating, revealed a survey conducted by a popular Indian dating app. The platform conducted the research in October 2015 among its users, with the participation of over 550 women. Over 63 percent of the respondents in the 18-25 years age group expressed they want men to upgrade their conversation skills, and interestingly over 73 percent women respondents in the 26-35 years age group shared the same desire.

Men take note! Women don't make the first move: In the online dating world, women do not like to send personal messages to initiate contact and later mating and would rather send "weak signals" than making the first move, a team of Indian-origin researchers from Canada have discovered. "Weak signalling is the ability to visit or 'check out' a potential mate's profile so the potential mate knows the focal-user visited," they noted. They found that users with anonymous browsing viewed more profiles and were also more likely to check out potential same-sex and interracial matches. Surprisingly, however, users who browsed anonymously also wound up with fewer matches than their non-anonymous counterparts. This was especially true for female users: those with anonymous browsing wound up with an average of 14 percent fewer matches.
