Those women who are planning to propose to their man today should drop the plan, and rather wait for him to pop the question, a leading expert on marriage has warned.

February 29 is the day when women traditionally propose to men. But in spite of decades of women's emancipation, more than 90 per cent of proposals still come from men.

Harry Benson, a political adviser on families and relationships, says that there's an explanation behind this trend.

He suggests that rather than going for it themselves, women should leave the decision to men in order to have a stable relationship in future.

Benson cited studies which have shown that it is crucial that a man makes a "positive decision" to marry rather than be coerced into matrimony for the relationship to be a success.

u00a0"Getting married needs to be a choice men make for themselves," Times Online quoted Benson, as saying.

"Whereas most women commit to a relationship when they move in together, most men will only fully commit when they have made a clear decision about their future," he added.

He said his observations were based on a study by the University of Denver which found that men who moved in with their girlfriends before getting engaged constantly had lower levels of commitment through a marriage
