Canada has a highly developed market economy and is ranked 10th largest GDP in the world. The service industry dominates Canada’s economy and employs three-quarters of the population.

The World Economic Forum uses parameters like medical care, education, life expectancy, amongst others to rank countries by quality of life.

Canada plans to welcome 401,000 immigrants in 2021.

Types of Canada Work Visa or Permit

Canada has two types of work visas or permits – Open and closed (employer-specific) work permits. As the names suggest – closed work permits are issued by specific employer, whereas open work permits allow you to work for any employer in a role of your choice.

Unlike closed work permits, under open work permits, you can simultaneously work for two employers, with no cap on the permissible number of working hours per week. International students are eligible for the open work permit through the Post Graduate work permit program.

Visa Programs Eligible under Open Work Permits (OWP)

A few Canadian work permits that are considered to be OWP are:

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit;
  • Temporary Resident Permit;
  • Temporary Work Permits for Spouses or Partners;
  • Birding Open Work Permit
  • World Youth Program Permit;
  • Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) Spousal Permit;
  • International Experience Canada;
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program;
  • Canadian Experience Class;
  • International Co-Op Program
  • Regular Open Work Permit;

Eligibility Criteria to apply for the Canada Work Visa

Before applying for a Canadian work visa or permit, the applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Valid passport or any other travel document specified by the IRCC
  • Medical examination certificate
  • Evidence of willingness to stay in Canada until the validity of the work permit

Upon fulfilling certain terms and conditions by both the Canadian employer and foreign skilled worker, the work permit can be extended.
