Tata Tigor vs Maruti Swift DZire vs Honda Amaze vs Volkswagen Ameo vs Ford Aspire: Spec Comparison

Tata is all set to introduce its new contender in the sub-4-metre category, the Tigor, on March 29, 2017. Although it is based on the popular Tiago, it has many additional features and can give a tough competition to its rivals. The Tigor will compete with the likes of the Maruti Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Ameo and the Ford Figo Aspire. Let's compare the specifications of the upcoming sedan with its rivals and see where it stands against them.

Dimensions

As the Tigor belongs to the compact sedan segment, its length cannot exceed the 4-metre mark. All its rivals have a similar story; however, except the Honda Amaze, all other sedans are few millimetres longer than the Tigor. But when it comes to the wheelbase, the Tigor stands third after the Ameo and Aspire. For reference, the Tigor has 20mm extra wheelbase than the popular Maruti DZire. The Tigor also has the biggest boot – of 419 litres – and also features a new boot opening mechanism that doesn't compromise on the luggage space as happens in the other four sedans. While the Aspire and DZire have the same width of 1696mm, the Tigor stands second with an overall width of 1687mm. When it comes to height, the DZire takes the crown with 1555mm of height, while the Tigor stands second. On paper, it seems the Tigor doesn't have the best-in-class interior space. However, it is more than what is offered by other popular sedans in this segment.

Performance

All cars except for the Figo Aspire have one petrol and one diesel engine on offer. The Figo is being offered with two petrol and one diesel engine.

All five sedans have a 1.2-litre petrol engine. However, the Figo has an additional 1.5-litre engine. As expected, the 1.5-litre engine has the highest power and torque but it comes mated to an automatic gearbox only.

Among the 1.2-litre engines, although the Tigor stands third in terms of power, it has the highest torque of 114Nm. Apart from the Figo, only the Swift DZire and the Honda Amaze offer an automatic transmission. Currently, the Tigor will only come with a five-speed manual transmission. An AMT transmission might be introduced sometime later. The mileage of the Tigor is not revealed yet and, currently, the Swift Dzire has the highest mileage of 20.9kmpl.

The Tigor has the lowest power and torque figures among the diesel engines in this comparison as the diesel engine on the car is the smallest – only 1.05 litre. While the Swift DZire has a 1.3-litre diesel engine, the other three cars have a 1.5-litre unit. With 110PS of power and 250Nm of torque, the Ameo has the most powerful diesel engine. All the cars have a five-speed manual transmission. However, the DZire and the Ameo also offer an optional automatic transmission. The popular Swift DZire offers the highest fuel efficiency among the diesel engines. However, the mileage of the Tigor is yet to be revealed and it might be more than what's offered by the DZire.

In terms of features, the Ameo has the most in its kitty. Although the price of the top-spec variant reaches the Rs 9.6 lakh mark, it does come with features to match the price, like rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, rear AC vents, and front armrest storage. The price of the Tigor is still not known, but it is likely to start around the Rs 4.2 lakh mark, making it the most affordable compact sedan here. Even if you go for the top-spec variant, it is expected to be priced around Rs 6.5 lakh, which makes it a very good deal, considering the features offered. It will come equipped with features like smoked projector headlamps, touchscreen infotainment system, reverse parking camera, Harman Kardon sound system, LED-powered tail lamps and LED stop light strip on top of the rear windshield. The Tigor does look like a promising and a value-for-money package. However, until its prices are revealed and we conduct a full comparison of it with its rivals, we can't be sure of that.
