History
On December 7, 1987, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The objective was to enhance action and cooperation to create a world free of drug abuse.
Significance of the day
The day holds immense significance as millions of people worldwide are affected by drug abuse. Many individuals who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which further harm their physical and mental well-being and hinder their access to necessary support. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), an organization committed to combating drugs, organized crime, corruption, and terrorism, acknowledges the importance of adopting a people-centric approach to drug policies, emphasizing human rights, compassion, and evidence-based practices.
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed by individuals, communities, and various non-profit organizations globally. It aims to draw attention to the pressing issue of illegal drugs in society. On this day, governments, non-governmental organizations, and communities organize activities and events to raise awareness, educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse, promote the importance of living a healthy life free from drugs, rehabilitation services and advocate for effective drug laws and programmes.
