The Ducati 1299 Superleggera is one of the motorcycles considered the epitome of track bikes ever produced on the planet, a shining beacon of the finest motorcycle engineering, technology and performance. Now, the first Ducati 1299 Superleggera in the country has been purchased by a passionate motorcycle enthusiast, Vikram Oberoi. It is a limited edition motorcycle and Ducati will make only 500 such units of the bike, out of which Vikram's bike is No. 209. Vikram also owns a Ducati 1299 Panigale S, a Ducati 916 and a Ducati 1098.
The 1299 Superleggera is the most technologically advanced motorcycle that Ducati has ever developed and is the first production motorcycle to have a carbon fibre monocoque frame, single-sided swingarm, rear subframe, fairing and carbon fibre wheels with aluminium hubs. The bike is powered by a Superquadro 1,285cc L-twin liquid-cooled engine that produces 215PS @ 11,000rpm and a peak torque of 146.5Nm @ 9,000 rpm, mated to a six speed gearbox. All this firepower is housed inside a body that has a dry weight of just 156kg, which is less than what the 223cc Hero Karizma ZMR weighs.
Suspension duties on the 1299 Superleggera are handled by fully adjustable 43mm USD Ohlins FL 936 forks with TiN treatment, billet fork bottoms and lightweight stress-optimized outer tubes, lightweight springs with 120mm wheel travel at the front; and fully adjustable single Öhlins TTX36 shock with titanium spring, adjustable linkage between progressive/flat carbon fibre single-sided swingarm with 130mm wheel travel at the rear.
Braking is done by two 330mm semi-floating discs with radially mounted Brembo Monobloc Evo 4-piston callipers at the front and a 245 mm disc with 2-piston callipers at the rear. The bike is equipped with cornering ABS too. It is shod with top of the line Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa 120/70 R17 tyre at the front and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa 200/55 R17 tyre at the rear.
The 1299 gets top of the line features like 6-axis Inertia measurement Unit (IMU), riding modes, power modes, and a whole host of acronyms like Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control EVO (DWC EVO), Ducati Slide Control (DSC), Engine Brake Control (EBC), Ducati Power Launch (DPL), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) and Ducati Data Analyser + (DDA+).
Additional equipment includes a rack kit which gets a titanium racing exhaust, racing windshield, machined mirror block-off plates, license plate mount removal plug, side-stand removal kit, front and rear paddock stands, and paddock bike cover.
Vikram Oberoi, the lucky 1299 Superleggera owner, said, “Ducatis are exceptional motorcycles and it’s a privilege or me to be one of Ducati’s customer in India. There is no better motorcycle manufacturer when it comes to performance bikes or bikes ridden on a racetrack.”
Ravi Avalur, Managing Director of Ducati India, said: “The 1299 Superleggera is one of the most exclusive motorcycles in the world, with only 500 units produced. Redefining the definition of the term “superbike”, it offers unmatched technology in a limited edition targeting the true connoisseur. We are very proud to deliver the only 1299 Superleggera in India to Vikram.”
The Ducati 1299 Superleggera was sold for a whooping Rs 1.12 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), making it, by far, the most expensive thing on two wheels ever sold in India.
