In a refreshing departure for India's education systems, CBSE has recommended 31 titles by the publisher for its schools. These include bilingual picture books, and fiction too

Tulika Books get the CBSE nod

As another academic year reaches its final leg, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has provided a shot in the arm for promoters and supporters of those who pitch for education to be imparted in a fun, illustrative manner, minus the clutter. Thirty-one titles by Chennai-based publishing house, Tulika, were recently recommended by CBSE to ensure that students will have access to a wide range of educational books that are a refreshing departure from the usual.

CBSE has recognised 31 books from Tulika

Speaking of the development, Niveditha Subramaniam of the publishing house says, “We are delighted that so many of our titles, from our picture books and bilingual picture books to our paperback fiction and non-fiction books, have been recognised by the CBSE. The selection process has been transparent and the panel of judges, fair; a wide range of books from many publishers have been selected.” She adds that given the fact that their books have zero visibility in even big bookstore chains, an endorsement by an organisation like the CBSE makes a big difference. The titles are in 9 languages including English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali and Gujarati.

What’s interesting is that the selection includes non-syllabus-like themes and subjects, to which she adds, “Many of the books selected are not conventional choices, and we are particularly happy about this. Online sales have gone up and there are steady orders from schools and libraries.”
