The Kobe Ipsos survey shows that Pune is reading short stories, adventure and educational titles. The Guide quizzed readers and publishers on what else is popular among the Pune's bookworms

Tracking the Pune's reading list

The eReading brand Kobe (alongwith Ipsos India) has conducted a survey on Indian cities and their favourite reading choices and genres. The survey showed that Pune’s readers are likely toread short stories and educational titles followed by adventure books.u00a0The Guide decided to speak to publishers, book club members, and book shop owners, about their perspective on the city’s reading choices:

Dr Sachin Bhide, founder member of the Business Book Reading Club, says, “We meet, discuss and read all kinds of business books. I feel that people who have a collection of books don’t have time to read and vice versa, so our group aims to bridge the gap between the two.”


Their 400-strong group include s people of all ages. “We have college-going students as well as older avid book readers. Earlier, people used to read a lot of foreign authors (when it came to business books) but now they have started reading Indian authors as well,” he adds, observing that The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman is quite popular and Indian author Subroto Bagchi is prominent for his business books.

Avinash Pandit, senior book editor and avid reader observes that books on health, physical fitness and do-it-yourself crafts are trending. “Books pertaining to the IT industry are in demand as well. People like to read books on history (the same is seen in Marathi books as well). Children’s books with a strong theme do well. Work and career-oriented books are read by a lot of youngsters,” he states.


Theme-based children’s books are preferred by kids and their parents

Milind Paranjape, owner, Jyotsna Prakashan, states that health-related books and fitness books are in vogue and are well-read. “People also like to read books that are scientific; we have books on painters that are liked by a lot of people. But reading of classic literature is reducing.”

Upendra Dixit, owner of International Book Services, says that fiction rules the market: “General interest books are more in trend as well as fiction.”

IT professional and reader Pariksheet Phuley (30) observes that he likes to read books on health as well as spiritual topics. “I also read a lot of autobiographies as well, as they inspire me a lot,” he states.

Housewife Aruna Kulkarni (63) reads health books to stay fit: “Ilove reading a lot and I like reading books that are historical. Books on health help me to stay fit.”

Survey findings
The Kobe Ipsos survey indicated that 95% of respondents across cities liked to read books or novels regularly, followed by newspapers and magazines.
