Toyota Fortuner records 5,400 bookings; waiting periods rise

The all-new Toyota Fortuner was launched on November 7. Here we are, less than 3 weeks since the day and Toyota retailers are already reporting waiting periods of at least two months, for both the petrol and diesel versions. As per Toyota's official release, the SUV has recorded over 5,400 bookings and 16,000 enquiries. Certain dealers say their order books are overflowing to the extent of having twice as many bookings as the available stock. Unsurprisingly, the most popular colour is white, while ‘grey metallic’ has found fewer takers.

Deliveries of the new Fortuner have already started, with Toyota reporting a "significant customer preference towards the automatic transmission".

The SUV is currently offered with 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engines with prices ranging between Rs 25.92-31.12 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The petrol engine is good for 166PS of power and 245Nm of torque, and can be had with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel engine produces 177PS of power and 420Nm of torque with the 6-speed manual transmission and 450Nm with the 6-speed automatic gearbox. While the petrol is only offered with 2WD, the diesel gets the option of 4x4 as well.

While the old Fortuner was rather underequipped, the new iteration gets loaded with features. The list includes LED lights, 17- (2WD) or 18-inch (4WD) alloy wheels, a smart key and a powered tailgate. Also offered is a reach and rake, adjustable steering, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, drive modes and a more advanced touchscreen infotainment system (with navigation) than the one offered in the old Fortuner.

The safety package is comprehensive too and includes seven airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control (VSC), hill-start assist and hill-descent control.
