To be or not to be

Urban Cafe's new outlet is Saket needs to make up its mind whether it wants to be a fine-dining restaurant or a lounge; the food though, isn't bad

This is a place of indecisions. That is the first thing that struck me when I entered Urban Caf ufffd's newly launched Saket outlet. As I walked up the stairs, I found the over 3,000 sq ft area to be clearly divided into two sections.

Lamb chop with galangal and lemon grass
On one side was the fine-dining area and the other side had a more loungy feel to it. Loud music blared as the DJ kept belting out one popular song after another. It looked like the owners were undecided what to make out of the place -- a fine dining restaurant or a lounge bar -- and in the end decided to keep them both.

The furniture though, is neither fine-dining nor totally loungy. In fact, some of them had cheap faux leather covers. Very tacky, we say! The air conditioning too, wasn't working well in some parts of the restaurant. Not great for a place that's just opened. The chandelier that hangs in the fine-dining area does nothing to enhance its d ufffdcor.

Mix and match
I walked in pretty late. But I was happy to see that the lounge area was almost full. In fact, people kept dropping in even during the course of my meal. The restaurant serves a mix of various cuisines. There is Italian, Indian, Continental, Chinese, Mediterranean and also a separate menu for Vietnamese cuisine. The bar, too, is well-stocked.u00a0

Brawls and more
I ordered some Achari jheenga along with Bailey's Irish cream to sip. The prawns were tasty but the ice in the Bailey's needed to be crushed instead of serving chunks of ice. There was also some Honey chilli lamb which were not half as great.u00a0

For main course, I decided to go for crepes with mushroom and goat cheese and paprika sauce along with French roasted duck breast. While the crepes arrived soon enough, the duck took a long time to come. By then I had almost lost appetite. It was around 12.30 and the restaurant seemed to be in a hurry to shut shop. The lights in the lounge area were turned off and were quickly switched on again when the manager realised we were still waiting for the main course.

Then there was a loud argument with the DJ, as the staff wanted him to stop playing while he clearly didn't. Not good for a place which is officially supposed to stay open till 1 am. When the duck finally arrived (after couple of smoke breaks), I had totally lost interest. It had to be sent back again as there was no appropriate cutlery for cutting it! However, the duck was heavy and filling and could have been relished had it arrived on time. The restaurant clearly has long way to go.
