Overseas counsellors will charge a fat fee to give you all the gyaan we're dishing out for free. Here are the tests to take if you're planning to study abroad

>> SAT
Take it if you plan to try universities in the US of A and Singapore. SAT 1 or SAT Reasoning Test, in its new format, has 10 sections and a runtime of three hours 45 minutes. The top score is 2400. Marks are calculated by adding up your score on each section: Critical Reading, Math and Writing. Gun for an 800 in each.

SAT 2 or SAT Subject Tests, on the other hand, are 20 one-hour multiple-choice tests in individual subjects. You can choose the subjects depending on individual college entrance requirements.

>> TOEFL
The Test Of English as a Foreign Language assesses your ability to use and understand Standard American English at a college level. It is required for non-native applicants at many American and English-speaking colleges and universities. A TOEFL score is valid for two years, and then is deleted from the official database. It is also accepted by universities in Australia, but again, you will have to give the IELTS , for Visa purposes.

>> IELTS
The International English Language Testing System is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Australia. Choose from the Academic Module or the General Training Module. It is accepted in Britain, Australia and some universities in the US.

>> GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test is a computerised examination created and administered by the Educational Testing Service on behalf of the Graduate Management Admission Council. Most good global business schools require it for their MBA programmes.

>> GRE
The Graduate Record Examination is a standardised test is needed to get into graduate school in the United States. It is similar to the SAT. Both are administered by the Educational Testing Service and have similar question formats, though the latter is designed by the College Board and is intended for a different level of education.
