Last week, Tesla quietly added a new variant – the 100D – in the line-up of the Model S. The Model S 100D is capable of doing an EPA (the United States Environmental Protection Agency) rated figure of 335 miles (nearly 540km), making it the longest-range electric vehicle (EV) on sale. No, don't get confused between the 100D and the P100D. The latter is the performance-oriented version of the Model S, which was introduced in August last year. And it also happens to be the quickest-accelerating electric car in the world – clocking 0-60mph (96kmph) in 2.5 seconds. However, both the versions use a common 100kWh battery pack.

All of this happened post the unveiling of the Faraday Future's FF91 – which will play prime adversary to the Model S soon – at the 2017 CES (consumer electronics show) a couple of weeks ago. The FF91 (to be pronounced FF nine one) features a 130kWh battery back (30> than the Tesla), powerful motors, and claims an approximate range of over 378 miles (600+km).

The new 100D has marginally improved the P100D's overall range from 315 to 335 miles. Until the FF91 goes on sale, the Model S is the new champ in the world of EVs when it comes to vehicle range. And I'm sure that Tesla's head honcho Elon Musk will come up with something to beat the FF91's numbers because, in the EV world, it is always about the figures!
