Across the world, Roman Catholics observe November 2 as All Souls Day. Like elsewhere, Mumbai's faithful throng its many cemeteries to pray for the departed. Whether or not you fall under this category, it might not be such a bad idea to tread into Sewri Cemetery, in central Mumbai.

This burial ground, opened in March 1867 is where some of Mumbai's most illustrious sons have been laid to rest. FW Stevens who built the Victoria Terminus and BMC Headquarters lies here. So does George Wittet, architect of the Gateway of India.

The Italian Government has set up a stunning marble enclosure to honour their slainu00a0 from the World Wars. You might want to stop by Dom Moraes' grave. Most of the older tombstones tell a story but we couldn't forget George Lawrence Gibson, Deputy Conservator of Woods and Forests in the Bombay Presidency's grave (d: 1887).

His mother's tribute reads, "He died of wounds inflicted by a tigress. Although attacked by the animal suddenly and unawares, he met its charge with cool courage and mortally wounded it."

At: Sakharam Lanjekar Marg, Sewri.
