A slice of the city that misses the eye
Phule Wada is situated in the Ganj Peth area, a few kilometers away from the Pune station. This is the place where Mahatma Jyotirao Phule stayed with his wife Savitribai Phule for some time. The site is believed to have been built in 1852. Mahatma Phule devoted his life to the aim of eradicating the evils of society. He strived for the welfare of the downtrodden and the suppressed classes of society.

His noteworthy contributions were his efforts for the education and the empowerment of women. The Wada has now been converted into a museum where visitors can get an idea of the legendary career of this great reformer. Once you enter the Wada, you can spot a well, which is important from a historical point of view.
Mahatma Phule had opened the well for the backward downtrodden classes of society who were not allowed to use water from the public reservoirs in the village. This is considered as one of Phule’s contributions to the liberation movement of the dalits in Maharashtra.
While it is located right in the heart of the city, many people are still unaware of it. Visitors bow down before the half statue of Jyotirao Phule in the courtyard. This is the place where Phule addressed small meetings of the Satyashodhak Samaj.
