Thanks to the EU's efforts, 10 mobile phone manufacturers have decided to create a universal charger

You see charging stations in many places like airports, with some twenty different types of connectors and you have to struggle to find the one for your specific type of phone. But now, thanks to the EU's efforts, you can escape this hassle, at least in the EU.

This is because the EU has asked some manufacturers to cooperate and try to come up with a universal charger. So, come 2010, and you will have such a charger, which works off a mini-USB connection.

USB rules

One of the biggest advantages of using the USB to charge a mobile is that you can do it almost anywhere. One of my colleagues uses this, and unlike the rest of the people who run around with bulky chargers, this guy roams around with a small normal-USB to mini-USB connector that is smaller than his little finger. He plugs his mobile into the PC with this and charges it.

What about India?

Such standards are fine, but they can only be applied to one geographic location because of the type of power system used for instance, while we use 220 volts, many countries use 110 volts and rules in that country cannot apply to India. In this context, there can possibly never be a charger that will work all over the globe, until it uses one of those recessed switches that toggle between 110 volts and 220 volts.

Since India is one of the countries with the fastest growing mobile markets in the world, it would be nice if our government came up with a system that would force Indian manufacturers to have a universal charger.

Leap ahead

Of course, while a universal charger is great, an even better idea may be around the corner the hydrogen battery. While this is still in the testing phase, Motorola and Angstrom Power have apparently come up with a prototype that is charged merely with water.

While this is simpler for users, it is also easier on the environment, and all you need to do is carry your water bottle around and you will never run out of charge!

Three much!
Today, some people have as much as three devices a mobile, a device like a Blackberry, and perhaps another PDA, to make no mention of the laptop. Such people always have a tough time charging all their various devices, especially when they check into hotels which don't have many sockets. A colleague says that her husband, who has three mobiles, is always out of juice on at least one of them, forcing her to call on another mobile when the first one runs out of steam!

QUICK TAKE
>>The EU is getting companies to come up with a universal charger
>>This will be a great boon to users
>>If India also gets mobile manufacturers to cooperate, it will be great for all of us
