Maruti Ignis Vs Mahindra KUV100 Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Vs Maruti Swift - Spec Comparison

Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the Ignis on January 13 during an EDM concert. The upcoming hatch is loaded with a lot of first-in-class features and looks quite promising. When launched, the Ignis will compete with the only compact crossover in the Indian market – the KUV100. Although the KUV100 wasn't a big hit in the Indian market, it looks like a micro SUV and offers a spacious cabin at an affordable price. However, since the Ignis is likely to be priced around Rs 5 lakh, it will snatch some of the market share from hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10. Let's compare these cars and see how they fare against each other.

Dimensions

The Maruti Swift is the longest (3,850mm) car here. In terms of length, the Grand i10 stands second (3,765mm), while the Ignis is 5mm shorter than the Grand i10, and the KUV100 is the shortest (3,675mm). However, it is the KUV which is the tallest (1635mm) and widest (1,705mm). The Ignis has the longest wheelbase (2,435mm) and highest ground clearance (180mm) among the four cars. The Grand i10 has the biggest boot of 265 litres while the Ignis stands second with 260 litres of boot space. The Swift and the KUV100 have 204 and 243 litres of boot space, respectively.

Performance

Petrol

The Ignis and Swift are powered by the same 1197cc petrol engine offering 84.3PS of power. However, the engine on the Swift produces 115Nm of torque while the one on the Ignis produces 113Nm.The Ignis is almost 100kg lighter (825 to 860kg) than the Swift (965 Kg). The Grand i10 also has a 1197cc petrol that develops 83PS of power and 113.7Nm of torque engine under the hood. The KUV100 has a 1198cc petrol engine belting out 85PS/115Nm – the highest among the four. All four cars are offered with a five-speed manual transmission. However, the Ignis and Grand i10 also offer optional five- and four-speed automatic transmissions, respectively.

Diesel

As in the case of the petrol version, the diesel variants of the Ignis and Swift also share the same 1248cc diesel engine – producing 75PS of power and 190Nm of torque – and the Ignis stands 100kg lighter than the Swift. While the KUV has a 1198cc diesel engine that churns out 78PS/190 Nm, the Grand i10 features a 1120cc engine that produces 71PS/159.8Nm. All four cars feature a five-speed manual transmission. However, only the Ignis offers an optional five-speed AMT.

Features

The Swift is the oldest car here while the Ignis, which is already in the news for its class-leading features, is yet to be launched. It offers features like a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, full LED headlamps with DRLs, multi-information display and other customization options. The Swift, KUV100 and the Grand i10 lag behind in terms of features. However, the Grand i10 is the only car here to offer rear AC vents.

Conclusion

The prices of the Ignis will be revealed on January 13. However, the base variant is expected to be priced around Rs 5 lakh and the top variant, which boasts all the first-in-class features, is likely to be offered for around Rs 7 lakh. This lands the Ignis in the territory of premium hatchbacks. The KUV is the most affordable car here, with a starting price tag of Rs 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and also offers an additional third seat in the front. On the other hand, the Swift starts at Rs 4.9 lakh, and the Grand i10 at Rs 4.7 lakh (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

The CNG variant of the KUV100 was spotted testing recently and is likely to launch in the first half of 2017. Although the fuel efficiency is still unknown, it would be more economical to run compared to the other three cars and its own non-CNG version. Both the Swift and the Grand i10 have been around for a long time and so fall behind in terms of features and space. That said, the new-gen Swift and the facelifted Grand i10 will hit the showrooms by the end of this year. For all you know, they will address a lot of the issues that their current versions are facing vis-a-vis the competition. Although the Ignis is the clear winner among the four cars right now, its launch price would have a great impact on its destiny.
