The job market's getting tougher by the day, and getting fired, far easier. The only tools of survival: enhanced performance and an academic edge. But of course, you're almost broke with the recent salary cut. Fret not; enrolling in a distance education program might just be a great way to build on your current works skills and give your career a cool boost. How? It'll introduce you to the latest industry trends, help polish your weak points and add that extra degree to up your CV's worth, at a cost lower than most regular courses.
"During this age of recession, most companies are looking for professionals with more and more qualities, so that they are saved from hiring another person for the same purpose. We have a centre for corporate educational training, and are trying to network with small and big organisations to look into their needs. If they want to improve their capability and be globally competent, we try providing them with a course which generally fulfills their demands. We sit with them, and package a module which suits them", says VN Rajasekharan Pillai, vice chancellor, IGNOU.

Young employees are seeing it as a lucrative option. "I got my software knowledge from a private institute and managed a job. But looking at the slump, I thought of getting an additional degree while working, and enrolled for MCA programme at IGNOU. This is surely going to act as a career booster and a life saver degree for me in future," says Ajit Kumar, an IT professional working with an MNC in Noida. Others feels it's a shield of sorts.
"Once I get a degree, I will be in a better position to negotiate in the future, as well as find a new job even if I m being kicked out," says Axis Bank professional Saurav Verma, who is pursuing a programme from the Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning.
