“Bharatnatyam means the culmination and combination of expression, music and rhythm. My performance is dedicated to Lord Krishna and revolves around the various events in his life -- from his birth to the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It is a 60-minute performance divided into five segments,” Barua tells us. For those who know their Bharatnatyam well, he will begin with a Mallari, followed by Varnam, Keertanam and Purush Viraha. The repertoire will conclude with Tillana.
Barua explains for those who have little clue as to what these mean. “Mallari depicts the ritual of decorating the deity with garlands and paying homage.
Varnam is the centre-piece of my performance and is divided into two parts. In the first part I will perform bhakti rasa where stories of the devotees of Lord Krishna will be illustrated. The second part will depict the various events in his life. In Keertanam, the audience will get a glimpse of the Anand Tandava where I pay homage to Lord Natraj. Purush Viraha on the other hand shows love and separation. Tillana will focus on music and footwork,”
he explains.
