However, in all these years it has never been staged at the iconic Raigad Fort from where it borrows its name. On Republic Day, Puneiites are in for a visual treat as they will get a chance to watch the play being staged live within the fort.
Director Avinash Deshmukh, says, “We have done over 350 performances of Raigadala Jevha Jaag Yete with the present team, but this event will be special and we are excited about it. We are a group of eight people and are happy to perform at the very fort where Shivaji Maharaj ruled.”
Swati Deshmukh, who is part of the cast of the play, admits that it’s a dream come true for the theatre cast.
The play by Vasant Kanetkar is about a conversation between Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji Maharaj. It depicts the historical figures as flawed and highlights their complicated relationship as father and son rather than focusing on them as warriors.
Interestingly, Puneiites who are keen on watching the play can avail of a pick-up-and-drop facility to the location.
Nitin Shastry, owner of Beat Destinations, who will look after the travel arrangements explains that a bus will leave on the morning of January 26 and will return by the evening of January 27. The bus will leave Narayan Peth at 6.30 am and reach the fort by 12 pm. Students from the Youth Hostel Association of India (YHAI), Mahad, will take the visitors on a tour of the fort. The play will be staged at 7 pm and on January 27, the bus will return to Pune by 6 pm. The total cost will be R2,700 per person and R2,000 for kids (5- 11 years).
