When fiery Scottish princess Merida turns to a retired witch for help to defy an age-old custom, she invites a curse upon her family, which only she can reverse.

DVD review: Brave

Refreshingly, this animated fairy tale has no sign of a prince rescuing a damsel in distress, instead focusing on a teenage princesses’ tumultuous relationship with her mother.

Brave is a film of many firsts — it marks Pixar’s debut fairytale and it features the animation studio’s very first female protagonist. An overhaul of Pixar’s animation system for the first time in 25 years was responsible for the film’s rich graphics, stunning landscapes and detail-oriented visuals. The story itself is well plotted, full of grandiose legends, as well as
interesting asides.

The DVD’s bonus features include The Legend of Mor’du, which features characters from Brave and provides further details of a fable that plays a small but pivotal part in the main film. Largely rendered in flat but appealing 2D animation, the short film acts as an interesting supplement to the main film.

La Luna, the other short film, is directed by Enrico Casarosa and was nominated for an Oscar in 2011. It’s a delightfully simple yet conceptually brilliant short introducing a family that comes out every night to dust shooting stars off the moon.

The most informative part of the extra features is the audio commentary starring the film’s director, co-director, editor and story supervisor. The four men take you through the entire film, regaling the viewer with anecdotes, details about deleted scenes, technical aspects and even a bit of Scottish history.
This commentary is a special treat for people interested in creating stories of their own thanks to its emphasis on character establishment and development.

Try as we might, we couldn’t find the other bonus features promised on the back of the DVD pack. Maybe we have to spring for the Blu-ray disc to avoid disappointment in an otherwise entertaining package.u00a0
