Condom maker to unroll world's thinnest safe

Among the high tech exhibitors at January's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Trojan Condom will flaunt its latest in "condom technology," with what the company claims to be the thinnest condom ever made, in addition to a multi-tip personal massager.

Announced December 27, the new condom, which is 40 percent thinner than the brand's standard condom and only 40-42 microns thick, is dubbed BareSkin. Trojan is also releasing a new spin on its Ecstasy condom, which according to Nielsen is the best-selling condom in the US. The new product features a warming/cooling lubricant and is dubbed Fire (&) Ice. Both new condoms retail for about $10 ( 7.6). While Durex condoms dominate the European market, Trojan represents 75 percent of condom sales in the US.

The new three-tip battery-powered vibrator is called Tri-Phoria and, at 5.7 (14.5 cm) inches tall, delivers five speeds, three pulse variations, and three tips, including two soft silicone tips and one hard-domed tip. The product retails for $39.99 (about 30), but is at this time only available in the US. What's interesting about the product is not only that it will exhibited at CES but that a representative for Trojan stated in a phone interview that the company plans to start unrolling the new vibrator in major drugstores in the US, such as Duane Reade, Target, and Walgreens. This is reportedly a first for the US, where sex toys are primarily sold in specialty sex stores, unlike, say, in France where vibrators are sold alongside fine lingerie in major department stores. Some US states have tighter regulations on sex toys, but the company is aiming for wide distribution by spring 2011.

Ongoing with CES, the 2011 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo will be held January 6-9 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas, where the majority of Trojan's competitors will be on display. The 44th CES will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and expects to attract more than 120,000 attendees.

In other condom innovations, consumers with allergies to natural rubber latex (NRL) may get some relief from a new type of latex condom that retains all of the advantages of traditional latex and (almost) none of the allergens. The Envy condom, made from a new patented low-protein variant of NRL, is sold on the company's website and via online retailers such as Condomania.com (international shipping available). A box of 12 condoms sells for $12.99 (about 9.50).
