Sale sessions, promo codes and discount deals are terms that every chronic shopper is well aware of, but imagine a special hour of discounts, freebies, and other exciting sales in a stipulated time frame.

As new online shopping sites are cropping up each day, the concept of ‘happy hour’ allows customers to shop without burning a hole in their pocket. The concept is very similar to the ones run by restaurants and pubs. Says Vikas Ahuja, chief marketing officer, Myntra.com “Usually, people browse through online shopping sites throughout the day. The idea of Happy Hour is valid only for that time limit and encourages shoppers to make a purchase only during a fixed time frame, which encourages them to buy the product immediately.”


On the contrary, Elitify.com— a popular fashion website carries out such deals to make use of the off- hours during the day, “We have a concept of a mid-day dash that is operational from 1 pm to 4 pm, the hours which are mostly called as the off hours. The unique concept makes good use of it by attracting maximum customers during that time,” explains, founder, Amit Rawal.

Though the discounts and sales are open to all customers, the mechanism of it changes very often and is also dependent on the festivals and special occasions durng that time. Explains Ahuja, “Other than period promotions these are normally held on special days such as Independence day, Rakshabandhan, Women’s day etc or with special themes such as Desi Beats, Durga Puja Special to name a few.”

There are others who allow registered customers as well as non registered members to shop from their online happy hours. They also don’t necessarily rely on themes, Sumit Sukhija, co-founder and CEO, Addimon.com, elaborates, “We give the flexibility to all customers and do not restrict them to a particular category. They get a flat 10 per cent off on any item they buy.”
