Apps that can help ensure hassle-free parenting

The path to becoming a parent and the early years of your children should be like a dream come true.

But for a lot of couples, it becomes a harrowing experience. Keeping track of menstrual cycles, difficulty in conceiving, not knowing what to expect during the pregnancy, the fear of going into labour any time and then continuously worrying about your new born, can take the fun out of an experience, that should otherwise be a beautiful one.

With a little help from modern gadgets and Apps, thought up by some great minds, having a baby can become an experience to cherish.

NOTE: None of these Apps or gadgets replace the need for regular visits to your gynaecologist and paediatrician. They are just there to assist a better monitoring of pre-natal, natal and post-natal years.

Optimus petit sophia fertility monitor basal body thermometer
A little on the expensive side, the Petit Sophia is an advanced Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Thermometer for those who prefer to manually chart menstrual cycles for tracking fertility and ovulation.

Though it looks like a regular thermometer, the Petit Sophia, stores temperature and symptoms for 210 days or six cycles, indicates fertile days, possibility of pregnancy and hypothetical due date.

It even has an alarm clock built into it to remind you to take the temperature every day at a fixed time for more accurate results. Plus it has a very handy PC print out function, wherein you can take a print out of all your monthly data and analyse it with your gynaecologist.

Woman calendar
Any good idea starts with the conception and nature has to provide the perfect circumstances for it to happen.

Woman Calendar works wonders in keeping track of your ovulation cycles, your periods, basal body temperature measurements and sexual activity, complete with charts and graphs of the data. You can also directly email the activity details from the App to your gynaecologist before your next appointment.

Motorola MBP36 remote wireless video baby monitor
Once the baby is born, it is not possible for parents to be with it 24x7. This is the time baby monitors come super handy.

Motorola’s MBP36 is a wireless video baby monitor that not only raises an alarm if your baby is crying, but also lets you see your baby all the time. It works on the 2.4 GHz FHSS wireless technology and allows you to keep an eye on the baby from upto 590 ft of distance from the transmitter device, with an out of range warning if you cross this limit.

The receiver has a 3.5 inch LCD screen, remote volume control and the ability to turn off the video remotely. The cameras have infrared night vision to help monitor the baby at night and remote pan, Tilt and Zoom built into them.

The MBP36 has a two-way communication, so that you can not only listen to your baby but also talk back remotely and if that does not soothe the baby, you can play pre-recorded lullabies and help the baby sleep. Priced at Rs 15,990, it’s worth every penny for the peace it can give to the parents.

Fetal Beats – fetal heartbeat monitor
While a mother can feel the foetus inside her, it is difficult for a father to connect to his unborn child. Listening to your unborn baby’s heartbeat can make its existence felt.

Fetal Beats is a Doppler Heart Beat monitor that can be used to listen to the heart beat of your unborn baby, as early as 20 weeks along.

It is a compact device that can be carried with you at all times and can be used at home or on the go. It acts as a great comforter in difficult pregnancies, to be able to listen to your baby.

Fetal Beats comes with its free App for IOS and Android-based smart phones and tablets, wherein, you can record and share the heartbeat of the baby with family and friends or even post it on social media.

My Pregnancy Today
Keeping a track of your child starts with the day you get pregnant. My Pregnancy Today is an App that helps you keep day-to-day track of the nine months of your pregnancy, while informing your about how your body will change, what’s ahead and how to cope with it.

The Growth widget lets you store your fetal development images, so that you can see the growth of your unborn baby. ‘Kick Tracker’ helps keep track of your baby’s movements, ‘Birth Club’ lets you connect with other expectant mothers and get you the much-needed help from their experience and ‘Baby Registry’ helps you discover what you need for the baby’s arrival and personalise the check list. It even keeps track of your appointments with the gynaecologist and sends you reminders for it.

Baby’s First Years
All parents want to record their baby’s first few years and keep the memories forever. Baby’s First Years is an App that works on your mobile devices and lets you create a Flip Book of everything you want to record baby’s pictures, first smile, first tooth, the baby’s likes and dislikes, basically anything that is precious to you in those first few years of growth. You can even add videos captured from your mobile device to the flipbook, making it look a life history.

The App lets you keep a record of the baby’s physical growth with height and weight charts and dental charts to record when the teeth show up. You can go back and edit any portion of the flipbook to make a complete book for your baby to see when he grows up.
