If you often wish you knew shortcuts of the city to beat that devilish commute, this is for you. FYI eavesdropped on Slumdog Millionaire actor Anil Kapoor educating Munnabhai star Arshad Warsi on Mumbai's lesser-known shortcuts
"I was born in Mumbai and have spent a lot of time roaming its streets. Most of us spend a substantial amount of time commuting, irrespective of where we live. And this is a city where time is more vital than anything else. There are some shortcuts I have used for a long time now, and they proved time savers," Anil tells Arshad.
Juhu to the Taj Hotel, Colaba
By Road: 1 hour and 20 minutes
Anil's shortcut: 40 minutes
This is one of the lesser-known shortcuts of the city, but I often use it to get to Colaba as it's very effective. Instead of travelling on the jam-packed Worli-Haji Ali down to Marine Drive route, I head towards the Central suburb, Wadala, bordered by Dadar on the West, Matunga on the Northwest, and Sewri on the South. I then get onto the Masjid Bunder Road, down Crawford Market and straight to Colaba.

From Juhu to Bandra
By road: 40 minutes
Anil's shortcut: 20 minutes
This is a commute several people have to undergo. All you need to do is take the Khar Danda Road instead of Linking Road. It may be a tad cramped, but it cuts down on time, since there are hardly any traffic signals.
Gateway of India to Alibaug, using ferry
By road: 2 and a half hours
Anil's shortcut: 50 minutes
I love this shortcut as it lets me enjoy a scenic boat ride. A number of kiosks lining the Gateway of India sell tickets for ferries and catamarans you can take. The ferry takes you to Rewas, and then you can take a bus to Alibaug. The cost of the bus trip is usually included in the ferry fare. However, the service is suspended during the rains.u00a0

Juhu to Film City, via the Aarey Milk Colony road
By Road: 50 minutes
Anil's shortcut: 30 minutes
When I had just started acting, I once reached late for a very important shoot. The director, a big name in Bollywood, gave me hell and didn't care that I had got caught in traffic. A co-star shared this shortcut via Aarey Milk Colony with me. The next time I took it, I saved 20 minutes.
Juhu To Madh Island via the Versova ferry
By Road: 1 hour and 30 minutes
Anil's shortcut: 15 minutes
I have often used the ferry to reach Madh for my shoots. I park my car at the Versova jetty and hop onto a ferry. It keeps me from getting totally exhausted. The ferry also connects you to Erangal, Aksa and Marve. Besides enjoying the fresh sea breeze rather than inhaling car fumes, you could also try haggling with fisherwomen for some fresh, off-the-boat catch.
